Cold Specks will release their debut album I Predict A Graceful Expulsion through Mute on May 22nd. The band have signed to Mute and release a video for Cold Specks’ track “Holland”.

Cold Specks is headed to Austin, TX this year for SXSW 2012 and will tour the US and Canada this May with Great Lake Swimmers. See below for a full list of dates.

Cold Specks is songwriter and vocalist Al Spx from Etobicoke, Canada, who now lives in London. The band’s name is taken from a line in James Joyce’s Ulysses:

“Born all in the dark wormy earth, cold specks of fire, evil, lights shining in the darkness”.

Describing her sound as ‘Doom Soul’, Cold Specks’ music is steeped in the musical traditions of the Deep South. No wonder then that Al cites the Lomax Field Recordings and James Carr as influences along with Bill Callahan and Tom Waits. With a voice that evokes the ‘spirit feel’ of Mahalia Jackson and the visceral tones of Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Cold Specks’ sparse arrangements and chain gang rhythms stop you dead in your tracks.

“My little brother, who was spending his summers with our mother in Toronto, had always told me of this girl he was friends with that had this amazing voice,” recalls Cold Specks’ manager, Jim Anderson. “As a producer I’d heard that so often that I didn’t take too much notice. Then I came in one night to find him and a few friends drinking in the flat and playing a CD of her demos. I was completely transfixed and just kept pressing repeat. I knew I had to work with her. I eventually persuaded her to come over. At that point she had never played with another musician and was completely self-taught with her own unique tuning and timings, which we had to decipher.”

“Jim convinced me to fly out and work on the record for a few months,” explains Al Spx. “That was a year and a half ago. I guess I’m permanently based here now. I didn’t know anyone when I moved here. We needed musicians and Jim knew a bunch. Rob Ellis (PJ Harvey’s regular collaborator) has been helping out with some arrangements and percussion and Jim’s old friends Pete Roberts (guitar), Thomas Greene (piano) and Tom Havelock (cello) also play on the record.”

The band recently performed two songs on Later With Jools Holland:

“It’s richly atmospheric and emotive, painting images of love and loss in your head. Mood music with a soul.” 4**** review, Q

Apparat release the new single Candil de la Calle on 26 March 2012 on Mute.

Taken Berlin-based electronic virtuoso Sascha Ring’s fourth album, “The Devil’s Walk” which has caused quite a stir amongst critics and fans alike. A stylistic departure from his techno mainstay, the album is full of brooding beauty, soulful vocals and ambient tempo and the stand out new single ‘Candil de la Calle’ showcases this expansion of musical vision.

Apparat enters a terrain of sparse dub rhythm, elegant strings and floating vocals; “Long have I waited here for nothing to come, a sequence of twisted turns that can’t be undone.” Though the lyrics are sombre the song’s Spanish title (which is reflective of time spent in Sayulita Mexico where much of the album was written) is suggestive of light, or more explicitly a candle in a dark street.

The overall effect is intoxicating; and the single coaxes its listeners to surrender to its melancholy whilst also uplifting them with hope and ethereal beauty.

The single comes backed with a dub remix by Sascha himself, a remix by Austrian Fennesz, who has recently remixed Oneohtrix Point Never, Nine Inch Nails and Miracle, and a Black Water reworking by Hamburg’s DJ Koze aka Stefan Kozalla, a Kompakt recording artist whose previous remix credits include Caribou, Battles, Matthew Dear and Bob Sinclair.

Apparat have also just been announced to perform at this year’s Bloc festival (6/7 July) in London and tour the US in March, dates include SXSW in Austin, full dates over at http://www.apparat.net.

BRAND NEW ALBUM OUT NOW

(CD, SPECIAL EDITION DOUBLE CD & DOWNLOAD)

Pop pioneers Erasure release a new single, “Fill Us With Fire” on March 13th 2012, taken from the latest album, Tomorrow’s World, out now.

“Fill Us With Fire” is an euphoric declaration of love and comes backed with a new track “Shot To The Heart”, produced by Vince Clarke at The Cabin at the end of the album sessions and available here for the first time, plus remixes from Gareth Jones, JRMX (Katy Perry, The Saturdays) and Liam Keegan (Madonna, Rihanna). In addition, Timothy Wiles aka Überzone / Q who mixed VCMG’s Ssss, the forthcoming Vince Clarke and Martin L Gore album, has remixed “A Whole Lotta Love Gone Riot” and DJ Yiannis has remixed “Be With You”. Check out the full tracklisting below.

Erasure release a new Video for “Fill Us With Fire” today, the kaleidoscope Video was filmed during the band’s 2011 tour in support of their Frankmusik produced Tomorrow’s World album, which was released in October 2011.

Tomorrow’s World, produced by Frankmusik (Lady Gaga, Pet Shop Boys, Ellie Goulding), sees synthetic melodies and electronic beats as dominant as ever. It’s the sound of Erasure rebooted, rejuvenated and fully recharged. Timeless and universal, they never look back. Such is the essence of great pop: a glorious celebration of right here, right now.

Tomorrow’s World was written in New York, London, and at Vince Clarke’s cabin studio in Maine following a short break for Erasure, which saw Andy Bell recording and releasing his second solo album Non Stop, and Vince Clarke reuniting with former Yazoo partner Alison Moyet for a recent tour. Tomorrow’s World was recorded in Maine, London and Los Angeles, with Vince using his vintage collection of analog synths for the final touch. The end result is a collection of electronic songs that sound totally contemporary and classic at the same time. All songs are written by Bell and Clarke.

From Lady Gaga to Metronomy, the futurist, electronic sound Erasure championed is more relevant today than ever and once again re-charging the global music scene. The award-winning duo of Vince Clarke and Andy Bell unleashed on the nation a succession of both influential and chart-topping pop anthems. Songs like “A Little Respect”, “Sometimes”, “Victim Of Love”, “Ship Of Fools”, “Chains Of Love”, “The Circus”, and “Breathe,” ensured a formidable presence on the singles charts complemented by five consecutive No 1 albums including “The Innocents”, “Wild!”, “Chorus” and the beginning of the worldwide Abba revival “Abba-esque”.

Erasure also release a limited edition Abbey Road Live album of their 2011 Roundhouse performance. Hear a sampler over HERE including new single, “Fill Us With Fire” plus live favourites “Blue Savannah” and “Chorus”.

US SHOW DATES ANNOUNCED AROUND SXSW

03/09/12 – San Francisco – 1015 Folsom/103 Harriet

NEW SINGLE – “CANDIL DE LA CALLE” – OUT MARCH 13th

The Devil’s Walk named ELECTRONIC ALBUM OF 2011 by iTunes

”Apparat has become adept at taking the strongest elements of electronic music and transforming them into a human sound that captivates listeners on multiple levels — the most important of which is emotional. That combination helps make The Devil’s Walk one of 2011′s most moving and inspired records.” – NPR

“A compelling mix of programming virtuosity, songcraft, and plaintive vocals, with spastic blips fluttering amid languid string washes, while a
mechanical scrim obscures and accentuates the underlying emotions. 8/10” – SPIN

“Ring shows off formidable production skill, wrapping his whispery vocals in some straight-up gorgeous arrangements. Synths swell up and retreat, drums skitter in and out frame — there’s a lot of motion but it’s got grace and purpose.” – PITCHFORK

Apparat announce two new show dates in March prior to heading to Austin for SXSW. Apparat brings the full band to San Francisco on March 9th at 1015 Folsom/103 Harriet and Los Angeles on March 12th at El Rey Theatre. In addition to other SXSW shows, Apparat is confirmed to play the Sennheiser & Paste party on Wednesday, March 14th. Further shows and details surrounding SXSW will be announced soon. See the full schedule below or visit Apparat.net for more information. Tickets on sale now.

03/11/12 – Los Angeles – El Rey Theatre: http://www.ticketmaster.com/event/2C00484810F45A10

In addition to the two US dates, Apparat returns to Mexico, where the record was conceived for two shows on March 7th in Mexico City and March 8th in Guadalajara. For a behind the scenes peak of The Devil’s Walk in Mexico check out the The Making Of The Devil’s Walk video.

The new single, “Candil De la Calle” out March 13th comes packaged with a dub remix by Sascha himself, a remix by Austrian Fennesz, who has recently remixed Oneohtrix Point Never, Nine Inch Nails and The Visitor, and a “Black Water” reworking by Hamburg’s DJ Koze aka Stefan Kozalla, a Kompakt recording artist whose previous remix credits include Caribou, Battles, Matthew Dear and Bob Sinclair. Click HERE to stream the album version of “Candil De La Calle”

With “Candil De La Calle” Apparat enters a terrain of sparse dub rhythm, elegant strings and floating vocals; “Long have I waited here for nothing to come, a sequence of twisted turns that can’t be undone.” Though the lyrics are somber the song’s Spanish title (which is reflective of time spent in Sayulita Mexico where much of the album was written,) is suggestive of light, or more explicitly a candle in a dark street.

Those with any level of interest in contemporary electronic music will recognize Berlin based Sascha Ring and his alias Apparat as one of the most prominent forces within the field. In addition to his three critically acclaimed albums, fans will also recognize Sascha’s work with Ellen Allien in which they formed the collaborative electro supergroup Moderat (half Modeselektor, half Apparat). With The Devil’s Walk, the fourth studio album from Apparat, Sascha once again raises his game.

Apparat Tour Dates:

We are happy to announce that Laibach’s soundtrack for the forthcoming film Iron Sky will be available on Mute, release date to be confirmed shortly.

In the last moments of World War II, a secret Nazi space program evaded destruction by fleeing to the Dark Side of the Moon. During 70 years of utter secrecy, the Nazis construct a gigantic space fortress with a massive armada of flying saucers, getting ready for the invasion of Earth!

This is Iron Sky, with an epic soundtrack by Laibach.

With a theatrical trailer viewed by more than four and a half million people on YouTube and an amazing reception from the fans, the film had its successful worldwide premiere at the Berlin Film Festival on the 11 February 2012.

The film creators have collaborated actively with their audience and fans on all fronts, from publicity through content to funding. People who were interested in Iron Sky could contribute in a variety of ways: by demanding to see the film in their home city using a system called Crowd Controls (http://www.ironsky.net/demand/), by collaborating in creating the movie in the acclaimed film creation platform Wreckamovie (http://www.wreckamovie.com/iron-sky/) and by investing in the film (10% of its budget came from fans).

As The Hollywood Reporter noted, “the score by Laibach adds character, mixing pastiche pop with symphonic elements“.

“I was actually sitting in a sauna with our team when one of us, Jarmo Puskala, came up with the idea that we should do a film about Nazis on the Moon. I agreed, and my number one demand was that if so, I want Laibach to do the music“, said Iron Sky’s director Timo Vuorensola about their choice of artist.

“It was a far-fetched idea at the moment, but stuck into my head as a general style guideline not just for music, but for the general approach for the film, and finally, when I heard they would be interested after we contacted them, I was in ecstasy. Their unique sense of humor and nice and twisted approach will really light a spark in the wretched genre of film music. We’re hoping to create something like Vangelis did for Blade Runner – not just a soundtrack, but a whole new world that echoes through the music.”

More information about the Iron Sky film and the soundtrack will be available soon.
