Cabaret Voltaire
Cabaret Voltaire
Cabaret Voltaire formed in 1973 and, alongside Human League, Throbbing Gristle, Fad Gadget and The Normal, were at the forefront of the UK Electronic Movement of the late ’70s. Way ahead of their time, Cabaret Voltaire’s blend of dance music, techno, dub, house and experimental made them, without a doubt, one of the most influential British electronic artists of the last 50 years.
First active between 1973-1994, Cabaret Voltaire featured Chris Watson (now an award-winning field recordist) until 1981 and Stephen Mallinder (Wrangler, Creep Show) until 1994. The group were inactive for 20 years until the 2014 performance at Berlin’s Atonal festival, with Richard H Kirk as the sole remaining member. An interconnected series of acclaimed Cabaret Voltaire releases – Shadow of Fear, BN9Drone and Dekadrone – followed in 2020 and 2021, before Kirk’s untimely death in autumn 2021.
