Miss Grit Announces New Album 'Under My Umbrella'

‘UNDER MY UMBRELLA’

Out 24 April 2026 on Mute

Miss Grit — the New York–based, Korean-American musician Margaret Sohn (they/she) — has announced details of their new album ‘Under My Umbrella’, set for release on 24 April 2026 via Mute. The album launches today with the magnetic new track ‘Stranger’.

Sohn is a bold experimentalist and architect of sculptural texture, known for deftly moving between analogue and digital, guitar and synths, and creating immersive sonic worlds framed by futuristic introspection. On their second full-length album, Miss Grit lifts the lid on their internal world, focusing sharply on the anxieties and heartbreak of the past two years. The result is a record that is both expansive and intimate, channelling the noir atmosphere of classic trip-hop while embracing maximalism and dream-pop sensibilities.

Last year, Miss Grit previewed Under My Umbrella with ‘Tourist Mind’, their first new music since the 2023 debut ‘Follow The Cyborg’ — a conceptual album imagining a fluid future beyond gender and genre binaries. That release earned Sohn widespread recognition, with i-D calling them a “singular talent” praised for their “compelling ideas and freewheeling creativity,” while Rolling Stone highlighted their “elliptical, hooky songs that take unexpected turns.” Around the album’s release, Miss Grit was named an Artist to Watch by Brooklyn Vegan, a Breaking Artist by FLOOD, and profiled by Rolling Stone as an Artist You Need To Know. They also performed for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’s LateShowMeMusic series and toured supporting Nation of Language, Bartees Strange, and The Last Dinner Party.

Under My Umbrella began to take shape after Sohn returned from an intense period of solo touring across North America, driving alone from city to city. Back home, they felt compelled to capture the raw, unfiltered energy of playing live. Like Follow The Cyborg, much of the album was written and recorded in Sohn’s Queens apartment. The songs arrived quickly as streams of consciousness, guided by a new principle: don’t overthink it. “I tried not to edit too much or force a moment to happen,” they explain, leaning into big choruses where it felt right. First-take guitars and vocals preserve immediacy and emotional authenticity, resulting in a densely layered album charged with electric crescendos and moments of unbridled catharsis. “It feels truer to myself, and more of a representation of what is actually coming out of me,” says Sohn.

Beyond its intricate production, Under My Umbrella is also about the courage of finding your voice. Many of the songs wrestle with expectation, disconnection, and the social anxiety of losing yourself in other people. “Before, I was really timid about what I said and didn’t say,” Sohn reflects. “Part of this record is about honouring my feelings and being more honest in my writing. I feel a deep connection to this album that I haven’t felt with my music until now.”

Miss Grit will celebrate the album’s release with headline shows in New York on 24 April at Nightclub 101 and Los Angeles on 2 May at Scribble, alongside an acoustic performance and signing at Rough Trade NYC on 23 April. RSVP for free entry (with album pre-order) HERE.

Under My Umbrella will be released on limited-edition crystal-clear vinyl, CD, and digitally on 24 April 2026.
