Liars
Liars
Liars have never stood still, and refuse to be categorised.
After forming in the LA area (Angus Andrew and Aaron Hemphill met at the famed California Institute of the Arts), the band decamped to Brooklyn and released their debut, They Threw Us in a Trench and Stuck a Monument On Top in 2001.
The debut found Liars at the vanguard of a newly emerging Brooklyn music scene, so with their next release, Andrew and Hemphill enlisted Julian Gross and wilfully confounded all expectations with They Were Wrong, So We Drowned, a confrontational, noisy concept cycle.
Soon after the band moved to Berlin to create 2006’s Drum’s Not Dead, (#6 in Pitchfork’s Albums of the Year), followed by their eponymous 2007 album before the band returned to LA for 2009’s Sisterworld – #1 in The Quietus’ Albums of the Year.
2012’s WIXIW, saw the band overcome a steep learning curve to record “direct into the computer”. Mess followed in 2014 – an angry, ecstatic, primal burst of ritualistic electronics.
Since 2017’s TFCF, following the amicable departure of Aaron Hemphill, Liars is now Angus Andrew. Latest LP, The Apple Drop, looks back at 20 years of Liars, and creates an entirely new world – sonically, thematically and lyrically.
All of Liars albums are currently being released as recycled vinyl editions.
